I was born and raised in Morrison City, a small community outside the Kingsport City limits. My childhood was one of a kind, I grew up having the real farm type living with all the extra's. I cannot remember ever not having a dog except for the 4 years I spent in the USAF.
I got involved in dog training in 1976 when I returned from the Air Force. I met a lady named Misty Hyatt who was a Professional Trainer and showed German Shepard's in Completions, I went to her for an obedience training class. This was the beginning of a life long adventure for me, while with her I became her "Decoy" for all the protection dog training classes and also started training AKC Obedience with her. I did this until the early 80's when I got into duck hunting and as everyone knows you can't duck hunt without a lab and a trained lab was really a plus. With all this evolving I started training labs for my hunting buddies, this lead me into the world of running Hunt Test completion. I trained, ran and judged Trials all over the eastern US until the mid 2000's. During this time I worked with over 20 different Professionals and got to experience running and working with 1000's of dogs. Now during all this I started working at Eastman and worked there from 1977 through 2009. After retirement I started what I'd always dreamed of and that was a Search and Rescue dog owner/handler. With my own money and no help from anyone I bought my first Belgian Malinois and started training. I read and studied everything I could find about this type of training but still lacked the help I needed so I found a SAR group and trained with them for 6 months (this was totally wasted time) where I found I knew more than them and they as suppose to be professionals. I met a man at a conference that taught me about scent and how it worked, wow this was the key to all my training. The SAR folks train their dogs to follow ground disturbance scents instead of human scent, that is why they can follow a trail of very old age but don't have a clue of what they are following. I found that with a Scent Discrimination Trained dog you will always be following a human trail and most importantly the one your looking for. I now spend all my time training a male Malinois for tracking/trailing and Human Remains and a female Malinois for tracking/trailing.

I am a member of the Kingsport Lifesaving Crew.
